Competition: Carling Cup 3rd Round
Date: 22nd September 2010
Time: 19:45 BST or 01:30 IST
Venue: Glanford Park

The Carling Cup has taken a new dimension, it has been rejuvenated since many managers started using the tournament as a chance to blood youngsters into the competitive football, and Sir Alex isn't one to be left behind, as the youngsters went on to win the Carling Cup last season. The excitement at being able to watch the latest batch of young reds in a competitive game is just immense!

The 3rd round draw pitted us against Scunthorpe United at their home turf, Glanford Park. The championship team is a tough fixture given the game is away from home and it’ll be a great experience and a tough test for the youngsters when they come out to face the Irons on Wednesday.

United come into this game on a high following our 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, though it’s very unlikely any of the players who started that fixture will be making an appearance for this game. United have a very promising bunch of youngsters waiting to be given a chance including the likes of Fabio, De Laet, Gill, Corry Evans, Eikrem, Brady, Ajose, Morrison, Will Keane, Hernandez, Smalling and Cofie to name a few.
But the main cynosure on Wednesday night will be on new boy Bebe, with several journalists waiting in the wings to pounce on him at the slightest hint of a mistake from him, it’s going to be a huge game for him. Also another player who will be keen to make an impression will be our fleet footed Frenchman Gabriel Obertan, with Antonio Valencia missing till almost February, he won’t get a better opportunity than this to establish himself in the first team. Anderson should also be making his long awaited return to the starting XI after making a sub appearance for the last 5-10 minutes of the Liverpool game.

Sir Alex has another selection headache when it comes to picking the youngsters who could get a chance; United played a reserves fixture on Monday evening where they romped home in style with a 5-1 victory over Bury reserves. Eikrem, Morrison, Ajose, Brady, Cofie and Corry Evans all played a part in the game, almost certainly ruling them all out from a start against Scunthorpe, but maybe a place on the bench is on the cards for a few of them, especially with Ajose just having been given no. 38 Jersey.

Scunthorpe comes into this game on the back of a 2-0 loss to Swansea, but they did beat Sheffield United comprehensively away from home with a 4-0 win. Their record at home so far this season has been ok with 3 wins and 2 losses so far. But they are a team that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and Sir will be sure to let the youngsters know that.

On the Injury front, United will be missing Michael Carrick and Valencia, while there have been reports that 3rd choice GK Ben Amos is out after having a minor surgery on his arm last week. Otherwise everyone else seems a 100% fit to play.

With Amos out Injured, Tomasz Kuszczak is sure to start in goal; Conor Devlin should be on the bench as the backup GK.  Michael Owen looks sure to play after Sir Alex said he would start last week and a few hours ago he also confirmed that Bebe and Macheda would play a part in the game too.

Expected lineup:
Kuszczak; De Laet, Gill, Smalling, Fabio; Obertan, Gibson, Anderson, Bebe; Macheda, Owen.
Subs: Devlin, Brown, Rafael, Eikrem, Ajose, Hernandez, Corry Evans.

Predicted Final Score: 2-0 to United.
