Our New King?!

Siddarth Tuesday, September 21, 2010
19th September 2010, it’s a date that most united fans and also quite a lot Liverpool fans won’t forget very soon, it was the day Berbatov produced his best performance till date in a Manchester United jersey. Berbatov had transcended to a surreal level before 72000 fans at Old Trafford in 90 minutes of football.

In my match preview I had predicted that Berbatov would be United’s key player, but even I didn’t imagine how true it would turn out to be, Berba couldn’t have picked a better fixture to score his first United hat trick, he was just dazzling.

Berba’s first goal was a header off a Giggs corner, surprisingly it was a free header for which he didn’t have to jump either, Fernando Torres’s marking was woeful as he seemed more interested in giving Berba a bear hug and he paid the price!

This setup an interesting start to the second half, and on 59 minutes, United produced two brilliant moments in the span of about 10 seconds, first was Fletcher showing brilliant vision and ability to produce a pass that would have made Scholesy proud! His inch perfect lofted pass reaching Nani, who cut in from near the corner flag to put in a left footed cross that missed Rooney’s head and landed on Berba’s thigh, and with his back to goal the Bulgarian produced what has to be the goal of the season so far! He knocked the ball in the air off his thigh and then fashioned a brilliant overhead shot, which left Pepe Reina a gaping onlooker as it went in off the underside of the bar. It was a moment anyone would pay to see over and over again, it left me gaping wide mouthed for a few seconds as it began to sink in that Berbatov had just actually done that!
United let the lead slip again after two defensive errors allowed the Scousers to peg us back to 2-2, but it was Berba’s day and Steven Gerrard or any other scouser on the pitch wasn’t going to stop him, he completed his hat trick with a deft header from a great O’Shea cross and sent it past Pepe Reina after he out jumped Carragher to the ball.

This deservedly was the winner, and Berba was the clear Man of the match, an honor no one could have doubted, on the night he was on another level, he seemed to have transcended above everyone else on the pitch.

The brilliance that Berbatov displayed reminded me of a certain mercurial Frenchman who played for United, the ability to transform games with moments that left one speechless was something both seem to share in common. It may be too early to say Berba has established himself as our main man, as he has to continue to perform well every game, but after Sunday’s game I’m salivating at the prospect of seeing Berba in action next week! This might be cheeky but, he might just turn out to be the new King!!
