Stoked to have finally won!!

Siddarth Sunday, October 24, 2010
No one would have believed me if I had told you 2 months ago that we’d have to wait till the 24th of October, in our 5th away game of the season, for the first away win! Unfortunately that’s how bad our start to the season has been, but the hard fought 2-1 win finally ended our torrid form away from home and hopefully it’ll be the beginning of a very long run of wins.

The man of the match has to be Chicharito, a great performance from the Mexican as lead the line along with Berbatov, looked composed in front of goal and scored two important goals. He showed great presence of mind to improvise with the header for the first goal; the header off the back of his head was unexpected and brilliant, it even caught Sorensen off guard. His second goal was more of him being in the right place at the right time, and scoring with an easy tap in following good work from Berbatov and Evra.

The game was very scrappy for most parts but, we created lots of good chances and restricted Stoke to very few attempts on goal. Our Counter attacking play was brilliant today, the pace going forward was exceptional, should answer doubts of those who thought that with Berba in the side, we couldn’t counter attack. As I suggested in my match preview, we needed a solid performance from both our defense and attack to win this game and that’s exactly what we got. Though I must add that were lucky not to end the first half with 10 men, Gary Neville made two very rash challenges on Mathew Etherington, and should have gotten his 2nd yellow for the second challenge on Etherington. Meanwhile, our attacking play was brilliant as Hernandez, Berbatov, Nani and Evra kept pounding on Stoke’s defense with great link up play and passing. Playing Evra as the left winger worked well and he was unfortunately denied a penalty when Rory Delap unfairly shoved him out of the way.

Our midfield’s performance was good but Carrick didn’t really do much once he came on, was invisible for much of the remainder of the game. An area where we clearly need to invest in come January or at least in the summer, Gibson and Carrick are just looking like they just cannot be depended on.

I never thought I’d be so happy to see us defeat Stoke, but from the reaction from the players and the staff it’s obvious how much this result meant to everyone! It was a huge psychological boost for the players and hopefully we won’t go through such a patch of form again this season. Hopefully in the next game against Wolves we’ll see Magnus Eikrem make an impact and Sir Alex finally gives him a well-deserved chance in the first team.

But for now, I’m delighted that we got all 3 points and I can finally enjoy a weekend without being in a dark mood after a Manchester United game!! Also Hernandez’s performance should silence all those who doubted Sir Alex’s ability to buy good players, especially a certain no. 10 who claimed we had no good players left. It’s time they realize Manchester United never buy Superstars, we make them!
