Our Bionic Dutchman

Van der Sar ; The Flying Dutchman

He might be 40, but he’s still going as strong as ever. Edwin Van Der Sar is easily among the best GK’s ever to put on the United jersey, The veteran Dutchman has been ever present at the back ever since we signed him from Fulham back in 2005.

Edwin’s arrival solved the biggest problem that was haunting our team since the start of the decade, a worthy successor to our Great Dane, Peter Schmiechel; having had several GK’s try their best to carve a niche for themselves at Old Trafford since Peter left, We went through horrors like Taibi, Roy Carroll to name a few, and finding the perfect replacement for Schmeichel turned out to be tougher than most of us expected. Everyone failed until Van der Sar joined the club.

Though when we signed Edwin, not many expected his signing to be a long term solution as he was already around 34-35; but Van der Sar has just been amazing since he joined, improving with every season, showing just how good he is; At 40, he still is easily one of the best GK’s around!
An excellent example of just how good Edwin still is the fact that Dutch national coach Bert van Marwijk even tried to get him to come out of retirement to feature in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Van der Sar has represented the Dutch national team 130 times, making him the country's most capped player.

This December we will know if this will be Van der Sar’s last season at the club or whether he would be extending his contract by another year before retiring. Van der Sar staying wouldn’t be bad news at all, especially if he continues to perform as well as he has, it would be a huge bonus for the team!

Finding a player good enough to fill the void Edwin’s departure is going to create is going to be very difficult, one of Edwin’s biggest assets that very few players in the world can claim to have is experience, having spent most of his career as the no. 1 GK at clubs, Van der Sar is among an elite club of players having amassed almost 750+ appearances so far, and there is nothing that can replace experience as massive as that!

If replacing Schmiechel was difficult, then I think finding a suitable replacement for Edwin will be an even more herculean task. The fact that who so ever becomes the next no. 1 at the club will be instantly labeled as Van der Sar’s successor, thus adding a huge pressure to the already to the pressure of being the Manchester United no. 1!

He might have not have spent his entire career at Old Trafford but I think many United fans will agree with me calling him a legend. He seems to have saved his best for the last few years of his career and he looks set to go out on a High. His levels of performances are astounding and age seems to have no effect on him, he should be called the Bionic Dutchman!
