The Curious Case Of The Owens

Sid Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Sid's Note: I'm always ready to help any aspiring bloggers by publishing their
articles on the blog, and this article is by a new blogger Abhinav CJ who
has his own blog. Abhinav takes a look at the two Owens at United and their
future at the club.

Recently, I talked to some of my fellow Red Devils on Twitter
regarding the futures of two of my favorite United players - Owen
Hargreaves & Michael Owen. In this feature, we give a glance towards
these two players whose careers at Manchester United are hanging by a
thread at the moment. Especially since their contracts end in the summer of
2011. Both of them are invaluable to any team when 100% fit, but
their once-fledging careers have been constantly hampered by
career-threatening injuries.

Owen Hargreaves

The Canadian-born midfielder joined us from Bayern
Munich in 2007 for a fee of around £17 million; at the time, Owen Hargreaves was
one of the world's best defensive midfielders around, he’s also capable of playing
well on the right flank either as a winger or even as
full-back. Probably the inspiration behind the European
double-winning season of 2007-08, Hargreaves is also a set piece
specialist & it's no surprise that both his goals that season came
from two world-class free-kicks! But unfortunately for him (and
United) his long-standing tendonitis problem arose again when he was
injured in a Premier League game against Chelsea, which was followed
by a 18-month injury lay-off. Things seemed to get better towards
the end of last season when he played 45 minutes of a Reserve game &
then featured in a 30-second cameo at Sunderland, but he again
returned to the USA for treatment in the USA in the off season. This season,
he defied all odds and shocked the Old Trafford faithful by starting in a home game
against Wolves but shockingly left the pitch just 6 minutes into the match after pulling
up his hamstring. Hargreaves is tipped to return to the first team
before Christmas but should he fail to recover, Sir Alex has no choice
but to let the 29-year-old leave as a free agent next summer.

Michael Owen

After the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo & Carlos Tevez in the
summer, Sir Alex signed up the former Liverpool & Real Madrid striker
from Newcastle United on a two-year deal. Easily one
of the better finishers on the planet, Owen was handed the legendary
No.7 shirt, formerly donned by George Best, Eric Cantona, David
Beckham & Cristiano Ronaldo. In the presence of Rooney & Berbatov,
Owen was more than often used as a substitute, despite that,
he bagged 9 goals in all competitions last season - including the
memorable stoppage-time winner in the Manchester derby, a hat-trick
against Wolfsburg in the Champions League & the equalizer in the
Carling Cup final, before limping off with a hamstring injury that
ruled him out for the rest of the season. This season he has scored
twice - once in the Carling Cup against Scunthorpe & the other being a
sublime header at Bolton. With Sir Alex having a problem of plenty
with strikers and this coupled with the rise of Javier Hernandez, Owen finds
himself out of favor & it seems highly unlikely that he will be
offered a new deal by the club.

On a more personal note, I'd wish both of them to remain at the club
for the rest of their playing careers! I say this because I believe Hargo
& Michael both bring a lot of experience to this club and since both of
them are proven winners, the team can always look to them to deliver
the goods when called upon.  And people who suggest that both of them
(especially Michael Owen) are past their prime shouldn't forget that
they bring the one thing every team needs - that's CLASS! And that's
something you don't get easily, right?

What d'you think guys - can the Owens race against time to save their
futures at Old Trafford? Feel free to leave your comments below or drop me
a line on Twitter @AbhinavCJ & I'll get back to you right away!

On an ending note, I'd like to express my thanks to Mihir, Andrew,
Raj, Daniel, Carl, Cliff, Roxanne, Suzy, Mayank & Nicole for their
opinions on Twitter.

That's all Folks!

Yours,
CJ
