Our Midfield isn’t as strong as it seems

Sid Sunday, February 13, 2011

Our team is among the best in the world but every team has its weak areas, while we do require a winger to replace Ryan Giggs, that need isn’t that urgent, especially given how well Giggsy is continuing to perform, also we have Park and Valencia set to return from their injuries. For me, our midfield is the area that needs strengthening.

Presently our midfield options comprise of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Anderson and Darron Gibson. While Hargreaves unfortunately looks unlikely to play Football ever again, I think it’s fair to discount him from the team. While a lot can be said about Scholesy, but it will never be enough to describe this maestro. Still as good as he was at his best. No one in England can match his ability to pick out a pass! But he is getting closer to retirement, and filling the void hell leave behind will be almost impossible.

Darren Fletcher has had a poor start to the season, but he seems to be slowly regaining his old form, and influencing games much more now. And his return to form is paramount if we are to mount a successful challenge for the Champions league and Premier League titles. He offers some bite in midfield and has grown into the role of our midfield destroyer, breaking up opposing attacks and covering the defense.

While Carrick has become a puzzle that is almost impossible to solve logically, guess work seems to work better! He has been excellent in some games, but also pathetic in others. Which Carrick will turn up for the game is anyone’s guess. But on his day Carrick can be brilliant, controlling the flow of the game and threading passes over the entire pitch. Hopefully he can find some consistency in his game or I think Sir Alex might not be so patient with him any longer!

Ando has been a revelation since his return from injury, he has a brilliant range of passing and also is a very quick player, this enables him to run at the opposition with the ball and get past players with a sudden burst of pace! Ando is probably the closest we have to a player capable of taking over from Scholesy, and with the resurgence in form Ando looks like he’s finally repaying Sir Alex’s faith in him.

Darron Gibson is not among my favorites at the club and tops my list of player who we must sell as soon as possible. Gibson for me is a one trick pony, his ability to shoot from distance is a great asset to have but then one expects him to offer a more than just that. He cannot pick a long pass, and restricts himself to short, easy passes. He has a good physique but his reluctance to get stuck in and use his strength to boss the midfield leaves him a slow player who can shoot! He does have the talent to improve but he requires regular football for that to happen.

Though we have 5 players competing to start every game, Scholesy is nearing his retirement and Carrick cannot be depended upon to perform well in a game!! While Gibson is just isn’t good enough, leaving us with Fletcher and Ando as our best options for the next few seasons. The rest of the season will be vital for the futures of Carrick and Gibson, as both have to really step up to the plate if they want to remain at Old Trafford!

Hopefully this summer will see us bring in at least one midfielder, maybe a creative player. Someone like Marek Hamsik or Nuri Sahin would be a brilliant addition to the midfield. Even Jordan Henderson seems a great prospect to keep an eye on, and would add a bit of steel to our midfield too. I think our midfield is good but it can be even better if we can get in a few new faces!
