A Review of Manchester United transfer targets: Midfielders

Sid Thursday, April 21, 2011

The midfield has been an area I have always expressed concerns over, and games we struggle in are always characterized by our inability to dominate in midfield. We may have the likes of Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Scholes and Gibson in the team, but the lack of consistency has been a cause of concern.

Fletcher has had an average season at most, while Ando has been injured for most part of the time. Carrick has been struggling for consistency, but has been in good form of late, while Scholesy is yet to decide on his future at the club and Gibson is yet to make a place for himself in the first team.

That said the number of midfielders linked with a move to United is numerous, but most of them just stories made up by the news agencies to just sell their papers. But as Sir Alex has said that there will be new players coming in this summer, some of the names doing the rounds might just be true. Here are my favorites to make a move to Old Trafford:

Jack Rodwell:
The Everton youngster has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for the past few seasons; especially after he had a brilliant 2009-10 season. The past year has seen him in and out of the Everton squad, suffering from injuries and not really living up to the hype surrounding him. But that doesn’t take away the enormous potential that he does posses, and the poor form might just be due to too much first team football too early in his career. A move for Rodwell will cost us a lot, but Sir Alex has shown before that he’s not afraid to splurge on players he thinks are worth it.

Though primarily considered a defender, Rodwell has been extensively used in midfield by David Moyes, and has played most of his first team games here. Only 20, Rodwell also has youth on his side, but he has already shown he has the pedigree to play in the Premier League.

Jordan Henderson:
Another English youngster who has been widely linked with United, Henderson’s emergence at Sunderland last season has certainly earned him several admirers. Already having earned his first England cap, Henderson is among the latest group of youngsters touted to be part of the next golden generation for England.

Mainly a central midfielder, he has also played as the right winger for Sunderland too. Henderson is a consistent player, who is willing to cover every blade of grass on the pitch for the team. He’s an ideal team player, and along with his great physical presence he can become quite a big player in the future. Bound to cost a lot, Steve Bruce will be sure to get as much as he can for the midfielder if he is going to sell him.

Charlie Adam:
A player who many United fans are hoping will not move to Old Trafford, Charlie Adam’s rise from the reserves at Rangers to setting the Premier league alight this season with his effervescent Blackpool team has been incredible. He has been the centre of almost every attacking move that Blackpool make and has so far lead the team brilliantly.

Sure to move in the summer, Adam has many suitors looking for his signature, including the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool. A move to Old Trafford wouldn’t come as a surprise though, with Adam’s Scottish roots, and also the close friendship between Sir Alex and Ian Holloway, if Sir Alex is interested in signing the Scotsman, then we’ll be among the favorites to get him.

Adam posses a great passing range in him, and also has a great ability during dead ball situations. He will certainly add creativity to our midfield if he does join, something we sorely lack when Scholesy doesn’t play. Though his price tag is quite steep, his signing is a gamble for any big team to take.
