Jones, Young and De Gea: Profiles & Career stats

Sid Friday, July 8, 2011

As everyone knows we've signed 3 players so far this summer, while it looks like we're still in the market for at least another player. So here's a short description of the trio also with a table of their career stats so far.

Phil Jones:

Date of Birth: 21-02-1992
Birth Place: Preston
Height: 5' 11'' (1.80m)
Weight: 72 kg

Position: Defender, Holding Midfielder.

Any player who rejects a move to Liverpool and Arsenal is sure to be an instant fan favourite, and that’s exactly what Phil Jones has done. The versatile youngster who broke into the first team under Sam Allardyce in the 2009/10 season was one the most sought after players of the summer. Sir Alex swooped in for him right when everyone thought he was set for a move to Liverpool. He went on to reject a move to the Scousers a second time when they made a last ditch attempt to buy him.

A powerful & uncompromising defender, Jones has great leadership skills, and is possibly England’s future captain. He & Smalling together are probably the best young CB’s in England right now and Sir Alex has settled our defence for the near future with such an astute buy.

With Rio & Vidic showing no signs of slowing down and with Smalling set as the 3rd choice CB, Jones might not be playing as a central defender much the coming season but his ability to play as a Defensive midfielder and also as a Right back provides us with much needed versatility in defense especially with the departure of John O’Shea and Wes Brown.

Ashley Young:

Birth Date: Jul 9, 1985
Birth Place: Stevenage
Height: 5' 9'' (1.75m)
Weight: 127 lbs (57.7 kg)

Position: Winger

Ashley Young has established as one of the most dangerous wingers in the premier league, he has been Aston Villa’s best and most consistent performer since they signed him form Watford in 2007.

Young, who prefers to use his right foot, is primarily a left winger who likes to cut in and cross. He is also adept at taking set pieces, and with his quick feet & electric pace, he’s a handful for any fullback. Young, though capable of playing down both wings, should be the 1st choice left winger in the team, while Nani and Valencia compete for the position of Right Winger.

Young’s signing is more than just the addition of a squad player, I’m sure he can make an instant impact in the team. Those who claim he isn’t good enough for us can just take a look at his stats from the previous 6 seasons in the League as they speak for themselves. He’s been a consistent performer ever since he appeared first in the Premiership with Watford.

David de Gea:

Birth Date: Nov 7, 1990
Birth Place: Madrid
Height: 6' 4'' (1.93m)
Weight: 76 kg

Position: Goalkeeper

David de Gea’s move to United was probably one of the worst kept secrets in football. He was probably the best option available for United in the market now, and his transfer was probably at the right time given his value would rise in another season and other clubs could be interested. Ironically nicknamed ‘Van de Gea‘ by his Atletico team mates, De Gea has a huge challenge ahead of him to be the true successor of the Dutch legend.

De Gea’s greatest asset is his ability to keep cool under pressure, something a GK will need to succeed at Manchester United. Though there have been questions over his experience, fans should remember that in 2 seasons at Atletico Madrid, he helped them win the Europa league final, and also the European Super Cup against Inter Milan., where he kept a clean sheet.

Also he has started almost every game for Atletico last season, and helped them to a credible 7th position in La Liga, which is good considering how poor their defence was. Like any young GK, he has been prone to the occasional rookie mistake, and fans must be patient with the youngster and give him time to settle in.
If he is able to fulfil his potential then United have settled the GK position for the next 15-20 years at least with a top Gk, who looks set to replace Iker Cassillas as the Spanish no. 1 too.
